When she beat breast cancer a few years ago, Eileen Bowlby's deepest wish was to help other
women who had received a diagnosis of the all-too-common disease.
Late in June, with support from her husband Don, and children Natasha and Mark, the retired
Dartmouth General Hospital nurse from Lantz fulfilled that wish. With six other breast cancer survivors
and two support paddlers in a voyageur canoe, they raced on the treacherous Yukon River.

The St. John's Breast Cancer Awareness Day luncheon held at the Battery Hotel and Suites, combined entertainment
and emotion.
The event began with a striking fashion show organized by Bellissima which was followed by guest speaker, Janice Bowie,
president of Bosom Buddies of Nova Scotia Dragon Boat Team.
Janice captivated the audience with her discussion on the important role dragon boating plays in having a positive
quality of life after breast cancer.
This presentation was quite exciting for the audience as St John's will be launching Newfoundland's first-ever breast
cancer survivor dragon boat team The Avalon Dragon Boat Team in summer 2007.

When Jessica Mader was diagnosed with breast cancer, it was, understandably, a shocking discovery for her and her husband.
"We were thunderstruck!" recalled the local woman, who had a mastectomy on January 30, 2005.
