The buddy system works for breast cancer survivors

It was 11 years ago that Nova Scotia breast cancer survivors Margo Kleiker and Sharon Driscoll came together to support each other and move forward with their shared vision of an active lifestyle, post-cancer. Born of that union was Bosom Buddies, a dragon boating team completely made up of breast cancer survivors. While Kleiker succumbed to her battle with cancer in 2003, Driscoll is still part of the team, which, in the 11 years since its creation, has grown to boast more than 70 members.

Cancer survivors helping others

THE BOAT comes into view as 20 women paddle vigorously on Lake Banook. Soon they will end another day of practice.
The women are members of Bosom Buddies, a team of breast cancer survivors that got together 10
years ago as dragon boat paddlers. Their goal was to improve their fitness levels, and more
importantly, increase their self-esteem while finding camaraderie among women going through,
or having completed, treatment.
